Having recently joined DMW, my journey into data strategy & management has been varied. I started my career as a Process Engineer in an oil & gas firm, and I then went on to work within the financial services industry, where I consulted on data management issues for several years.
My interest in strategy and data management was brought about by the constant issues that arise from poor quality data, analytics and governance. I felt that I could really make a difference in these areas.
Outside of work, I am an avid hiker. I have just completed walking the full length of Hadrian’s Wall.
I pride myself on my ability to bring people together and solve key issues around data.
My background as an Engineer provided me with the foundations to work with complex information and multidisciplinary teams – something that I feel has become even more invaluable within technology.
I am very hands-on when solving client problems and I am not afraid to get stuck in to resolve difficult issues, test ideas or prove solutions.
One of my personal career highlights was the development and implementation of an all-encompassing data strategy & management frameworks within a Tier 1 asset manager. The organisation was struggling with lack of direction, poor data quality and minor regulatory breaches.
After establishing a baseline of maturity, I worked closely with key stakeholders across the business to ensure that the root causes could be captured and resolved by the strategy. The strategy was rolled out gradually across the business’s data domains and monitored during this period. The new guidance, processes and controls helped reduce the number of data quality issues by 80% and increased overall trust in the data produced by the organisation.
