The challenge

> Our client, a global energy company, required a large-scale migration of their applications from their mega data centres to the public cloud. Previous programme governance and operating models led to delays and unnecessary data centre lease extensions after migration activity was slower than projected.


> DMW identified that this global programme involving all business units had limited centralised tracking and ownership at either business unit or group level, resulting in no stakeholder engagement or buy in.

How we helped

> DMW implemented a new agile, group operating model that was able to deliver migration in stages and respond to any unseen changes or challenges. It could also be scaled up and down with regards to the people, processes and tools needed to execute and support the migration workload.

> We also created high, medium and low-level integrated plans that were used to easily track dependencies across delivery projects and re-plan activity accordingly.

> Our technical expertise and migration experience also allowed us to introduce standardised reporting and dashboards for centralised tracking and gave full visibility of the entire programme’s activity.

The results

> The programme is on track to deliver 94% of apps and data by the end of 2019.


> Considering the programme’s 4-year migration window, 49% of the apps will have been delivered this year using the new operating model. This demonstrates a massive increase in migration velocity by nearly 200%. This also means that no further lease extensions are necessary as we have remediated delays and are now on track with the programme’s timelines.

> The operating model and reporting functionality have now been scaled and are being used across programmes in the portfolio. Over 5,000 apps are being pushed through the operating model for cyber risk remediation and cloud migration activity.
