Green IT
An impending power crunch means being energy efficient will not just be green but a matter of business survival.
The planned reduction in the UK’s electricity generation capacity as dirty coal and aging nuclear power stations are decommissioned over the next ten years will lead to a "supply gap" that, according to some analysts, could lead to temporary blackouts as early as 2012. The pressure is most likely to be felt around London, which also has around 80% of the UK’s data centre capacity.
Coupled with the potential supply gap, the cost of electricity has become a significant factor to businesses. Many CIOs do not realise that electricity costs can form up to 10% of their organisation’s total IT spend (even if it doesn't appear as a line item in their budgets). Industry analysts are predicting continued large cost increases, which must push green IT rapidly up every CEO’s and CIO’s agenda.
Even a medium sized data centre containing a thousand servers produces around 3,500 tonnes of CO2 per year. It is quite conceivable that regulation will mandate that data centres reduce their electricity usage. At the very least, organisations should be looking at "Green" data centre technologies from a Corporate and Social responsibility perspective.
Now is the time to act. DMW believes it can help deliver a win-win-win, by helping firms lessen the impact of the energy crunch, help save money and improve sustainability. Our services include:
- Helping site your data centre in a location where localised blackouts are less likely to occur, and where power is generated from environmentally friendly sources
- Enhancing existing data centre facilities with green technologies such as virtualisation and advanced power management
-
Identifying targeted upgrades of older data centre infrastructure to more energy efficient alternatives’
